American Slang every English Learner should know!

"Hey, what's up man?"

We're sure some people just gazed at the ceiling!

Let's elaborate.

There are some general words and sentences which actually have a specific/logical meaning but are used in a completely different way in American English Slang.

We believe every student learning English at out center or in the United States must know them in order to speak English naturally.

Here are some of them;

What's up?

meaning "What's happening in your life?" or "What's new in your life?"

Your answer should be "Nothing much." or "Just hanging around, you?" or "Good, you?"

To dump somebody (verb)

meaning if you dump somebody, you’re probably going to break their heart. If you dump your boyfriend or girlfriend it means you stop having a romantic relationship with them for some reason and if you get dumped someone broke your heart!

"Well, my best friend is really upset her boyfriend dumped her for some other gal. How cruel of him!"

Epic Fail (noun)

meaning the word epic is considered as huge and we know what fail already means. Put the two words together and that’s what it is – a ‘big failure’ or ‘complete disaster/failure’. You’d used this noun when something hasn’t gone the right way as expected and it’s used to exaggerate the idea of failing or doing something wrong.

"The movie was an epic fail! It was a waste of my time and money!"

Babe (noun)

meaning referring a person who you think is hot and attractive. Be careful though, you should only use this when speaking to another person and not the babe because they may get offended.

It is also referred to a person who is close to you; mostly your boyfriend/girlfriend or closest friends irrespective of their gender.

"Look at that babe, she's all slim and tall and nicely dressed."

You might have seen captions like "Chilling with my babe" or "Gym time with babe" or "My babe forever."

We'll get back with more of such stuff!
